Gonzalo Rubalcaba & Aymée Nuviola DUO “Viento y Tiempo”
“Viento y tiempo” is the project (re)uniting Aymée Nuviola’s vocal talent and Gonzalo Rubalcaba’s piano one. It was presented last year with a backup band. This is a more intimate version of the vocal-piano duo, which probably highlights its emotional essence more than the spectacular one. The return of the two Cuban stars is preceded by the latest international award for both: the 2022 Grammy Awards (the ceremony took place in Las Vegas on April 3rd). Rubalcaba won the Grammy Award for “Best Jazz International Album” (“Skyline” – Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette), Nuviola was nominated for “Best Tropical Latin Album” (“Sin Salsa No Hay Paraíso”).
Behind the project of the two Cuban artists, there is a charming story about a new encounter between two stars who knew each other when they were kids: their mothers were close friends, and they both studied music at the Conservatory in Havana. Many years have passed since then, and Gonzalo and Aymée have become leading personalities of Cuban music in the world (she won one Grammy and one Latin Grammy; he won three Grammys and two Latin Grammys). And, of course, Rubalcaba is also one of the most famous jazz pianists worldwide.
Today, they combine their talents to create what is expected to be a genuine tribute to Havana’s musical tradition. They recorded the project at Blue Note Tokyo. The record (“a tribute to their mothers and the music scene in Havana”) was nominated for a Grammy.
