REDMAN-MEHLDAU-MCBRIDE-BLADE: A MoodSwing Reunion – 2021 Date
Mood Swing is the title of the third album released by Joshua Redman. The disc was released in 1994 and consolidated the fresh fame of the young saxophonist, who has followed in his father, Dewey’s, footsteps (who played with Ornette Coleman and in the “American” quartet of Keith Jarrett) and who, according to all, was destined for a great career especially after having won the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Saxophone Competition three years earlier. The Moodswing quartet included three other brilliant jazz promises, Brad Mehldau on piano, Christian McBride on double bass and Brian Blade on drums. The band has been a guest of both the winter edition (the first ever) of Umbria Jazz in Orvieto and the summer edition in Perugia.
Today the quartet returns in the same formation as then, with the difference that it is now a true superband, because in the twenty-five years since the release of that disc these young promises have become authentic stars of modern jazz. The four Mood Swing artists are all well known to the Umbria Jazz public who has had the opportunity of listening to them many times and in different contexts.
