“Astor Piazzolla – 100th Anniversary” – QUINTETO ASTOR PIAZZOLLA
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Astor Piazzolla, one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. He reinvented the Argentine tango to make it a globally popular genre which has been included in the concert seasons of classical music and in theaters. Piazzolla is now one of the most performed contemporary composers in the world and his repertoire includes over a thousand compositions for the most diverse ensembles, from solo pieces to the big symphony orchestras with choir.
In 1995, three years after the Maestro’s death, his wife Laura Escalada Piazzolla created the Fundación Astor Piazzolla to preserve and promote his music. The Quinteto Astor Piazzolla was formed in 1998 with five virtuoso musicians and tango music experts. Pablo Mainetti, bandoneon; Barbara Varassi Pega (instead of Nicolás Guerschberg), piano; Serdar Geldymuradov, violin; Armando de La Vega, electric guitar; Daniel Falasca, double bass, with Julián Vat, musical director. These are the musicians whose mission is to keep Piazzolla’s modern tango revolution alive.
