Roberto Gatto Quartet
ROBERTO GATTO QUARTET
with ALESSANDRO PRESTI, ALESSANDRO LANZONI, MATTEO BORTONE
From a classy sideman in the first steps of his career, highly sought after by the most important Italian musicians and also by Americans passing through Rome (the list is practically boundless, from Chet Baker to Johnny Griffin, from Pat Metheny to Steve Lacy, from Bob Berg to George Coleman), Roberto Gatto, with the passing of time, has gradually accentuated his role as leader and creator of original musical projects. Now Gatto, drummer, composer and arranger, dedicates himself first of all to his own music. A curious and open-minded artist, he went from playing tributes to some of the topical moments in the history of jazz such as those to the quintets of Miles Davis and Shelley Manne to
re-reading the music of Frank Zappa (with Quintorigo) and progressive rock. With this quartet we are in a perfectly acoustic dimension. Gatto avails himself of the contribution of the new faces of Italian jazz, in line with his vocation for teaching and his commitment to the research for young talents. Gatto is always attentive to the new generations and this is certainly not a secondary feature of the identikit of a great artist who, despite international success, continues to spend time on the development of tomorrow’s musicians. Or even those of today, considering the skill of the three members of the quartet: Alessandro Lanzoni and Matteo Bortone have both won, in two different years, the Top Jazz award as the best new talent; Alessandro Presti won the Massimo Urbani competition in 2014.
