Francesco Bearzatti Quartet “Portrait Of Tony”

After wandering among Tina Modotti, Malcolm X, Monk, and Woody Guthrie, Francesco Bearzatti dredges up a musician who would deserve a high consideration, clarinetist Tony Scott. The latest album of the saxophonist and bandleader from Pordenone, “Portrait of Tony” - it will be presented live at Umbria Jazz, on the centenary of Scott’s birth - is dedicated to this unique, brilliant, and unfortunate jazzman with an incredible story and a strong artistic personality. Here is how Bearzatti recounts Scott: “It has been a while since I daydreamed about Tony Scott, about his incredible musical skills and his adventurous life. Tony was an amazing talent and a complete competence, and an excellent pianist, arranger, and orchestra conductor. With his competence and verve, he could have been really famous in the show business and made a lot of money. However, Tony was pure. He loved jazz, bebop, and its devotees. He was also committed to civil rights. He would never betray his close friends Charlie Parker and Billy Holiday, for whom he talked to New York’s kingpins who owned the nightclubs to get gigs for them and himself, thanks to his Sicilian origins. He became popular in the ‘40s and ‘50s, collaborated with the greatest musicians, and specialized critics elected him as Best Clarinetist of the Year for several years”.
