Isaiah Thompson Trio

Isaiah Thompson, pianist, composer and former band leader despite his young age, found an exceptional mentor in Wynton Marsalis, who wanted him at his side in many formulas, from quartet and quintet to more extensive formations such as the large orchestra of the Jazz at Lincoln Center. With this same orchestra behind him, along with other young and less young colleagues, Thompson participated in an important event called Handful of Keys: A Century of Jazz Piano. In practice, some of the best pianists of the contemporary jazz scene performed with a repertoire ranging from Jelly Roll Morton to Bill Evans, from Thelonious Monk to Dave Brubeck, in other words one hundred years of jazz seen from the keyboard. Not a simple commitment: not only did they need to be excellent performers, but also profound connoisseurs of the history of jazz. Thompson began studying piano at the age of five and then moved from classical music to jazz, continuing his training at the prestigious Juilliard School. In addition to leading his bands, he has played with Maestros like Christian McBride, Steve Turre, Joe Farnsworth, Rodney Whitaker. His debut at Umbria Jazz sees him with the trio.
