Marisa Monte

Marisa Monte, a singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist from Rio de Janeiro, is considered the most beautiful voice of her generation in the crowded field of Brazilian popular music. Many people think she is the heir of Elis Regina and Gal Costa. Marisa Monte has re-discovered the Brazilian repertoire of the less known past. At the same time, she has written internationally renowned elegant songs. She won four Latin Grammys and earned a transversal following with her virtuous combination of samba and popular song with soul, funk, and pop, thanks to an expressive and sophisticated vocalism, which was “educated” with classical studies. When she was young, she studied opera singing, even in Italy. She has a strong bond with Italy, even because of her origins. She also has a musical bond with our country: Marisa has sung Italian songs and won the Premio Tenco in 2021 (she is the first Brazilian female artist). On that occasion, she sang “Vento Sardo” on the stage of Sanremo, a memory of a boat journey on the Sardinian Sea. Her first studio album was recorded mainly in New York in 1991 (a live album of a TV show was released before it) and produced by Arto Lindsay. Marisa Monte also debuted as a composer with this record. Many great artists worked on this project: Ryuichi Sakamoto, John Zorn, and Marc Ribot. Over her successful career, she has worked with the most important Brazilian artists in studio and on stage, including Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes on the famous Tribalistas project. Actually, the two artists, as well as Arto Lindsey, often appear in Marisa Monte’s music production. Artists such as Philip Glass, Bernie Worrell, Laurie Anderson appear in her albums. “Portas” came out for Sony last year and is the first studio album after over ten years. It was recorded during the pandemic through remote sessions in different parts of the world. “I hope Portas can bring some hope in the future”. _________________________________________________________________________________________

Gilberto Gil & Family – NÓS A GENTE

Last year, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Berklee College of Music at its campus in Valencia and was appointed a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL). In this year's tour, the Bahian artist is surrounded by children and nephews who are musicians, singers, composers, and arrangers. This aspect is a free and intimate approach to music simultaneously. Gilberto Gil is not only a myth of Brazilian popular music – he helped to bring this genre to excellent artistic levels – but a music legend in the world. Gil managed to merge the rich traditions of his country (especially the ones of Bahia) with the African roots, which are very deep in Bahia, and the new sounds (rock, pop, and reggae). This “internationalization” operation of the Brazilian culture took on the aesthetic and programmatic characteristics of Tropicália in the 60s, thanks to Gil, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Os Mutantes, and more. This operation continued even during the exile of Gil, Veloso, and other exponents of that movement in the European countries after the military dictatorship. This Bahian artist boasts an extraordinary artistic career: over sixty records, two Grammy Awards, and seven nominations). He is also an intellectual and politician: Gil was the Minister of Culture in Brazil, received the Légion d'Honneur from the government of France, was designated UNESCO Artist for Peace and FAO Goodwill Ambassador. He is a charismatic artist on the world music scene. He is loved for his generosity, is engaging on stage for the magic mix of samba,  reggae, afrobeat, rock, funk, popular traditions, which has often thrilled the public of Umbria Jazz. _________________________________________________________________________________________
