Paolo Fresu & Lars Danielsson

Trumpet and double bass. Sometimes, perhaps, with a slight “help” of electronics. It is this that Paolo Fresu aand Lars Danielsson have recorded, inserting original themes and a few standards on the album Summerwind, released a few months ago. The CD (for German label ACT) constituted their debut as a duo. Now the partnership between the Sardinian trumpet player and the Swedish double bass player moves from the recording studio to the live event. One of the keys to reading the musici of this duo, as can be seen from the disc, is the relaxed ease with which Fresu and Danielsson create melody. As for Fresu, this is not surprising, considering that this is one of the most characteristic pieces of his artistic identity. For Danielsson, it is worth remembering that the propensity towards melody is very widespread in northern European music. For example, Jan Garbarek, Bobo Stenson, pianist Jan Lundgren of Mare Nostrum and the trio project with Fresu himself and Richard Galliano, but we can also go back in time to Grieg and Sibelius. What is certain is that the two are very comfortable in a chamber dimension with soft colours which plays a lot on nuances. It is a music simple in its architecture, which does not look for special effects and does not indulge in virtuosity. It is a jazz of substance and content and, above everything else, of riveting lyricism.
