Ray Gelato & Friends
With his ironic swing that smacks of other times, Ray Gelato, singer and saxophonist, has become, one edition after another, one of the favourites of the Umbria Jazz audience. The London son of an American soldier stationed in Great Britain, the young Ray grew up listening to the songs of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin on one hand, and rock & roll and jive on the other. At the time the darlings of the public, especially teenagers, were Louis Jordan, Louis Prima, Bill Haley. For tenor sax, Ray's model was Sam Butera.
Starting from the synthesis of these influences, Ray has built an explosive formula that recycles with freshness and energy, and above all with a great sense of humour, the carefree music that was played and danced to in the 50s and 60s. A formula with which he has gained great popularity, especially in Italy. Launched by Umbria Jazz, that has hosted him several times in its programme, he has become a favourite of the festival audience.
