The Comet Is Coming

The Comet is Coming is the result of the collaboration of Shabaka Hutchings (King Shabaka), a London-based saxophonist - he was raised in his parents' native Barbados -, keyboardist Dan Leavers (Danalogue), and drummer Max Hallett (Betamax). The group's name comes from a BBC Radiophonic Workshop piece of the same name, with cosmic suggestions of literature and sci-fi. With cosmic-jazz pioneers Sun Ra and his Arkestra as myths, this original band of sound explorers in the seething cauldron of the contemporary London scene performs an explosive fusion of nu jazz, psychedelic rock, electronica, funk, and afrobeat. Artists such as Alice Coltrane and Jimi Hendrix can be found in their music background. They describe their sound as "apocalyptic space funk." A visionary and spiritual new thing. The band formed in 2013 and debuted two years later. The first album was nominated for the Mercury Prize. In 2018, the band signed with Impulse! and made two more records. The concert is also the chance to turn the spotlight on British jazz, which has been building a solid and original identity in recent years. Caribbean, African, and Oriental influences – a multi-ethnic metropolis like London is rich in these cultural elements – merge into this jazz music. Adding to this, genres such as psychedelia, funk, post rock, electronica, and more: here’s an explosive combination of sounds that works as a soundtrack to a musically lively and innovative London. _________________________________________________________________________________________

Cory Wong feat. Dave Koz

“I want people to experience instrumental music in a different way. This is hype. It’s more than just guitar”. That is how Cory Wong – an American guitarist, bassist, songwriter, producer, podcast host – explains his approach to music. Multiple influences mix in his music background: jazz, rock, soul, funk. Raised in Minneapolis and based in New York, Cory achieved unprecedented success (including a Grammy nomination) with a series of works as a solo artist and with Wulfpeck, Stay Human, Dave Koz, The Fearless Flyers, Chris Thile. Besides fourteen studio albums, eight live albums, and four in collaboration with other artists, “Live in Amsterdam” is made with Metropole Orkest, and “Mediations” is a project with Jon Batiste in a new-age atmosphere. Cory talks about himself as a composer and performer. For me, it’s all about the listener’s experience. I want them to have a visceral response like: ‘I feel better’, ‘That was really fun,’ or ‘I got to escape for an hour’. You’ll hear my voice through the guitar, but I’m just a hype man. To uplift audiences with instrumental music that has no singing or lyrics is a fun challenge. I’m trying to solve the riddle. If I can get one person to feel good this way, it’s a success.” _________________________________________________________________________________________
