The Trio – Kevin Hays, Ben Street, Billy Hart

A trio, or rather, “The Trio", is the perfect example of how one of the most “classical” jazz formulas (piano – double bass – drums) can play today. The band includes three authentic masters of their instruments, and a long-time collaboration strengthens it. For instance, Street has been a member of the Hart Quartet for more than fifteen years. Pianist (but also songwriter and singer) Kevin Hays is one of the most acclaimed artists of his generation. Brad Mehldau, who made a piano duo project with Hays, said: “Kevin Hays is a true original. Everything he plays has a deep intelligence and swing.” Bassist Ben Street studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston with Miroslav Vitous and Dave Holland before moving to New York, where he started his intense career. He has performed with Danilo Pérez, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Roswell Rudd, Lee Konitz, David Sanchez, James Moody, Mark Turner, Frank Foster, and Clark Terry. Veteran drummer Billy Hart is a jazz icon. Over his 60 years of career, he helped write many pages in modern jazz history. Here’s a partial list of his collaborations: Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Smith, McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, John Scofield, Bobby Hutcherson, Kenny Barron, Paul Bley, Shirley Horn, Lee Konitz, Charles Lloyd, Joe Lovano, Mingus Dynasty, Chick Core, and countless others. The music of The Trio is in the recent album “All Things Are”, recorded at a New York club to celebrate Hart’s 80 years.
