Tenor saxophonist Robin Verheyen and pianist Bram De Looze are two of the most valued musicians on the Belgian jazz scene. They often perform together and boast a solid interplay. They share a passion for Thelonious Monk’s music, whose compositions preserve the same appeal despite the passing of time.
2017 was the centenary of Monk’s birth, and they were commissioned for a project to celebrate the momentous event. The duo became a trio with Joey Baron, one of the most significant drummers (Jim Hall, John Zorn, Bill Frisell).
It was supposed to be a one-time collaboration, but the success was so huge that the trio, MixMonk, toured and recorded an album.
MixMonk celebrates “the High Priest of Bebop” with freedom and an extremely original signature in its own compositions and the reinterpretation of Monk’s iconic works.
