This formula certainly isn’t one of the most common. Saxophone and guitar are a “chamber” duo that requires harmony between the musicians and attention from the public. More than any other formation, understanding, mutual knowledge and willingness to listen are fundamental for this duo. Tonolo and Bianchetti have already met in different projects: their most recent one is a record by Fonè, “Songs We Like”, that presents them in the compact dimension of the duo.
Tonolo was part of the Gil Evans Orchestra and Paul Motian’s Electric Bebop Band. He has long collaborated with Enrico Rava, Giovanni Tommaso and Rita Marcotulli, and tested himself with contemporary music. He enjoys a high reputation internationally that lets him play with his bands at major festivals and jazz clubs worldwide.
Giancarlo Bianchetti graduated with Leonardo De Angelis at the conservatory but has also studied jazz guitar. He performed at Umbria Jazz with the Dottor Dixie Jazz Band and the Marco Tamburini trio.
His most significant collaborations include Louis Hayes, Jack Walrath, Luigi Bonafede, Piero Odorici, Andrea Pozza, Ares Tavolazzi, Bobby Watson, Eliot Zigmund, Steve Grossman, and Tony Scott. Bianchetti has gained a great experience with songwriting by playing in the Vinicio Capossela band for about a decade, but he has also recorded with Gianmaria Testa.
