Mitch Woods & His Rocket 88’s

In America he is considered one of the best modern performers of traditional genres such as blues, rock & roll, boogie, jive. His latest album recorded last year at the New Orleans festival earned him a nomination for the 2019 Blues Blast Awards for Best Live Disc. Woods gained another nomination at the Living Blues Awards as a pianist. Mitch Woods is a New Yorker who started playing classical music at age eleven, then moving on to blues and derivatives. Singer with a hot voice and pianist of sparkling technique with a spectacular view of music, Mitch Woods returns to Umbria Jazz at the head of his historic band, the Rocket 88's, which was founded back in 1980. The band was first active in the clubs of northern California to soon become a successful brand at federal level. Among Mitch's reference models are great personalities of American musical history: Fats Domino (to whom his last CD is dedicated), pioneers of piano boogie like Meade Lux Lewis, the great pianists of New Orleans such as Professor Longhair and Louis Jordan, the nexus between swing and rock & roll. According to Keyboard Magazine, “Woods lays down an authentic 50s-vintage rock piano groove, comparable in power and rhythmic nuance to classic recordings by the young Jerry Lee Lewis”.
