Cimafunk

You can find the youngest Cuba in Cimafunk’s energy and rhythm. He is the most innovative project in recent years: part rapper, part soul man, looking to the future but constantly connected to the musical traditions and the incredible variety of sounds of his homeland. His second album, “El Alimento”, features Chucho Valdes and George Clinton, and it was produced by Jack Splash (Alicia Keys, John Legend). Born in Pinar del Río, he grew up listening to salsa and other Cuban genres, Stevie Wonder and James Brown. So it was almost natural for young Cimafunk to figure out the music to play in the future. His talent did the rest. After moving to Havana, he reached his musical maturity meeting the most important and innovative Cuban artists. In the fall of 2016, he started his solo career under the name of Cimafunk. His music is a brilliant synthesis of Prince’s funk, Al Green and Bill Withers’ soul music, Benny Moré and Bola de Nieve’s Cuban trova, and Los Van Van’s songo. It took Cimafunk only an album (“Terapia”), composed and produced on his own, and a video (the single “Me Voy”), to become the alternative Cuban music star, together with super energetic shows from L’Havana to Paris and New York. According to Billboard, he is one of 10 Latin Artists to watch in 2019. Since then, in just three years, Cimafunk has continued his rise to unify black music starting from the solid Caribbean roots but with massive doses of funk and African rhythms. He’s an authentic revolution for Cuba. On May 1st, 2020, in a recording studio in Havana, Cimafunk recorded a song with Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Aymée Nuviola. The result is a song and a video that spans and connects different generations of Cuban music. From this point of view, “Azúcar pa’ tu café” is a programmatic manifesto of borderless music. _________________________________________________________________________________________
