The ninety years of Sonny Rollins

The Saxophone Colossus turns ninety years old today, September 7.  If any living jazzman can be described as a cult figure, then it is Rollins. In a career stretching back seventy years, he has met with practically all of the legendary figures of jazz from bebop on: Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Bud Powell, Dizzy Gillespie!

Rollins is the quintessential tenor player, and he is surrounded by the respect and admiration of millions of fans and crowds of imitators. On stage, he is an inspiring performer who always gives his utmost. The title he has been given is not something that belongs to the past, and today Sonny Rollins continues to be a Colossus of the sax.

Happy Birthday Sonny Rollins-
