Gianluca Petrella Cosmic Renaissance
Gianluca Petrella’s Cosmic Renaissance are back in orbit, freely inspired by the work of one of the great outsider’s, Sun Ra, a musician who is little talked about today but is a unique figure in the history of jazz. Petrella and his Cosmic Renaissance will be performing in the very same square in which Sun Ra and his Arkestra played at the first edition of Umbria Jazz in 1973.
Petrella’s project was born in 2007 and since then, performing all over Europe and recording three albums, it has continued to develop and take on new forms and sounds. What guides it is not so much the music itself but the approach to music that was taken by Sun Ra, the guru-like figure who called his band the Arkestra and claimed to have come down to Earth from outer space. Petrella does not attempt to faithfully recreate Sun Ra’s music, but rather explores his incredible visionary ability to imagine new sonic and aesthetic worlds, and this ability is something that Petrella shares with Sun Ra.
