Pedro Martins hit the headlines seven years ago when he won the prestigious Montreux Guitar Competition as a young Brazilian prodigy. After studying the guitar as a child, this eclectic musician has become a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter. He’s perfectly at ease with typical Brazilian genres like samba and choro, as well as with jazz, fusion, progressive rock, and world music. He has become famous after working with musicians such as Kurt Rosenwinkel (they have played together for a long time), Yaron Herman, David Binney, Jacob Collier. He has also collaborated with Brazilian jazz stars such as Hamilton de Holanda, Gabriel Grossi and Toninho Horta.
His second album, “Vox”, came out in 2019, featuring Rosenwinkel and excellent collaborations, from Brad Mehldau to Chris Potter. Martins is a highly talented artist. Although it may be easy to be impressed by his guitar virtuoso technique (Martins is a self-taught musician), he is a sensitive and inspired artist who does not put virtuosity before content. The solo performance – his debut formula at Umbria Jazz – lets the audience appreciate his outstanding qualities.
