JAZZ IN AUGUST
Perugia, 7 – 10 August.

WHAT KIND OF A RELAUNCH WOULD IT BE WITHOUT MUSIC?
Even at the height of the lockdown, the Fondazione Umbria Jazz never gave up, continuing to believe that the moment would come when, in compliance with the safety regulations and guidelines set out by the health authorities and public institutions, it would be the time to start producing music again, even this year.

Given the complexity of the current situation, the July 2020 edition of the festival had to be cancelled. The next summer edition of Umbria Jazz, Umbria Jazz 21, will be held in Perugia from 9 to 18 July 2021, but in the meantime, the Fondazione has created a special event that is in every way worthy of the UJ logo.
The name: Jazz in August
The dates: 7 – 10 August
The venue: Perugia’s Piazza IV Novembre

Jazz in August will be dedicated exclusively to Italian jazz, which for many years has occupied a prominent place in the festival’s programmes. However, with the exception of the event held at Assisi four years ago to raise funds for earthquake victims in Umbria, this will be the first time that an entire programme will feature only Italian musicians. It is hoped that this will contribute to the relaunch of Italian jazz, which has paid a heavy price as during the epidemic many musicians have been unable to work.

At the same time, even in a year as difficult as this one, there is a desire to see jazz, music and culture continue to play their role in the life of the area, in promoting its tourism, and in contributing to the region’s international image. It is too soon for the festive nights in Perugia that are typical of Umbria Jazz, but it is certainly the time for rebuilding and for recovery.

Radio Monte Carlo will be the official radio station of “Jazz in August”: its programs, its website and its social networks will give ample prominence to the event and on its frequencies will be given free admission to concerts. Maurizio Di Maggio, unmistakable voice of the radio station, will tell the atmosphere in Perugia and will present the evening performances.

In the meantime, the temporary merchandising store of Umbria is open in Corso Vannucci n. 49, until September 15th.

THE PIAZZA
Piazza IV Novembre is the heart of the civil and religious life of Perugia, with the medieval town hall, the Palazzo dei Priori, on one side of the square, the Cathedral, San Lorenzo, on the other, and between them the thirteenth-century fountain, the Fontana Maggiore. This Piazza is also the heart of Umbria Jazz. The festival has used it as a stage every year since the first edition in 1973. The history of Umbria Jazz has passed through this square, and continues to do so: Gian Luca Petrella and his Cosmic Renaissance are appearing here this year, performing music inspired by the legendary Sun Ra, who played in this very Piazza way back in 1973.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Three shows are programmed each evening at 7.00, at 9.30, and at 11.30. The exception is the evening of 7 August, when there will be two shows, at 9.30 and at 11.30.
The square will be enclosed by barriers, and the biggest change from previous years is that there will be no standing during the concerts. Seats must be booked in advance, and they will be positioned at a safe distance one from the other in accordance with social distancing regulations. There will be a total capacity of 500 people.

There will be detailed instructions to explain safety measures and how to move around in the enclosed concert area. Hand sanitizers and surface disinfectants will also be available. Face masks will be compulsory and members of the public will have their temperatures taken on entering the concert area. There will be no ticket office, and numbered tickets have to be booked online. The entrance to the concert area will be at the corner of Corso Vannucci and Via Fani. The 350 seats available to the public will be divided into 3 sectors, with a different access time for each sector. Staff will be on hand to help maintain social distancing between members of the public and to assist entry and exit from the concert area. Similar measures will be taken for performers, sound crew and staff.
