The New York Times has associated Lizz Wright’s voice with barrel-aged bourbon or butter-soft leather. It’s not just the voice that makes Lizz Wright such a charming figure.
She is a songwriter and bandleader. Recently, she has formed her own record company to finally master her own artistic choices without submitting to major labels’ conditioning. She signed with Verve Records at 23, then moved to Universal Music Group, and ultimately to Concorde. Blues & Greens Records is the name of her own label, launched in June 2022 with the release of the live album “Holding Space”, while her studio debut album, “Shadow”, will be released in Spring 2024, including five original songs. The first single, “Sweet Feeling” – already out – is a good blues song. The blues intrigues her at this stage of her career, which started as musical director of a small church where her father was the pastor in Georgia. Living in Chicago – one of the blues capitals – is surely a source of inspiration.
“Singing the blues in Chicago is like finding sap in a great old tree. The blues is in the spirit of the city.”
